In addition to the well-known tourist destinations in Malaysia—Port Dickson, Penang, Ipoh, and so on—another spot that promises an awesome getaway is Miri, Sarawak!

Miri is a coastal city, which is also the second largest, in Sarawak. It was previously a fishing village (1910) until it transformed into a city and administrative center for northern Sarawak since the discovery of oil in 1929.

Featuring a beautiful landscape, a rock formation, and a beach which is gaining popularity. The beach is often visited by tourist for its “blue tears” phenomenon due to the micro-organisms which produce bright blue light on the beach. The blue tears can not only be seen in Tusan but also to other areas like Lutong Beach, Piasau Boat Club, Taman Selera, Beach Republic and so on…

How to get there:

Take a flight to Miri Airpor and ride a taxi to Bekunu in order to reach the Tusan Beach. The beach is about 36 kilometers from downtown Miri.

Located in the northeast of Sarawak, about 80 kilometers from Miri is a limestone cave and archeological site. It is also the site where a 40,000 years old human remains were discovered. In addition to the interesting history, Niah National Park also offers different activities like jungle walk, cave experiences and more.

How to get there:

Via road or river

It takes about 2 hours’ drive from Miri and 3 hours to Bintulu. Then ride a motorized longboat from Batu Niah town to the park headquarters.

Since Miri, Sarawak is an oil city, this museum located on the hilltop overlooking Canada Hill, allows people to understand the history of petroleum even more. The museum features the first oil well and displays oil formation and distribution maps, underground oil, overseas oil rig models, and oil drilling machines.

This 82 feet-long seahorse-shaped lighthouse has become a landmark in Miri, Sarawak. Aside from guiding the ships that enter to Hong Kong, this lighthouse also serves a great spot to watch the sunset.
