Like the infamous Taj Mahal, Kellie’s Castle was built as a symbol of love for his wife, Agnes, a Scottish woman whom he brought over to Malaysia after marrying. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Helen—but William wanted a son. His wife had troubled conceiving another child that it took her another eleven years to bore a child—and that time, Agnes gave birth to a son, Anthony. As a celebration, William started the construction of the castle, which he named after his mother: Kellie’s Castle. Unfortunately, due to the Spanish flu, which spread from Europe to Asia soon after the World War I, the workers in the castle were struck by the flu causing them death. Cutting the long story short, the castle was never completed.
