With the new released book of the world’s leading international travel guide, Lonely Planet, it’s Malaysia’s pride to get Johor Bahru’s Glass Temple (Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple) included into its new book “Secret Marvels of the World”. In fact, there are two other sites in Malaysia that were included in the list: the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir, Melaka and Thaipusam Festival in Batu Caves.
The oldest Indian temple in Johor
The Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman was built in 1922 and serves as the oldest ancient Hindu temple in Johor Bahru. Then, it was rebuilt in 2008 at a cost of 3 million. Thus, creating a temple covered with colorful pieces of glass, inside and out.
Took 16 months complete
90% of the temple is made of glass sheets, which took it 16 months to complete the reconstruction. At present, this glass temple serves as a unique temple in the world, in fact, it has been included in the Malaysian record.
Religious figures
Aside from Hindu gods, there are also Islam, Buddhism and eight other religious figures placed inside the glass temple, whom people can worship. Also, it is the first in Malaysia to be designed with walls fully covered with 300,000 mukni Rudraksha beads that came from Nepal.
