Voting at election is one of the factors that make you a responsible citizen. In Malaysia, citizens who are 21 years and above are eligible to vote. However, one can not be classified as a voter if he/she has not yet applied for registration.

For those who are about to vote for the coming elections, be guided by this tutorial.

How to register as a Malaysian voter?

① Bring your MyKad ID card—or any identification card as a proof of identity—to the official registry (post office or political party)

② State to the counter staff that you’d like to register as a voter. Be noted that registration is for free.

③ Fill in the relevant forms and make sure all details needed are accurate.

④ Once completed, make a copy of the registration form as a reference.

Where to register as a voter?

① Ibu Pejabat SPR Putrajaya (Election Commission Office)

② Pejabat Pilihan Raya Negeri (State Election Commision Office)

③ Pejabat Pos Berkomputer Terpilih (computer system’s post office)

④ Pejabat Dærah / Majlis Dærah (City Council)

⑤ Program Out-Reach SPR (voter extension program activities)

⑥ Representative of political parties

How to check vote status online?

*Since the Election Commission processes and updates voters’ lists every three months, voters can check the application result three months after registration.

① Visit the official website of the Malaysian Electoral Commission: http://daftarj.spr.gov.my/DAFTARJ

② Enter your ID number (12-digit number with no”-” and “space”)

③ Click “semak” query

If the website display “Record not found”, you have not registered as a qualified voter. On the other hand, if “Being processed” (Sedang Diproses) appears on the website, your information is being processed and no further registration is required.

If you are a qualified voter, the website will display “Registered Voters List” where you can see your voting information. Please be noted to change your address if you have moved, or report to Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya Malaysia (SPR) if address has been changed to another area.
